So—you’ve just found out you’re having a baby (congrats!). You’ve planned your maternity session, sent out the baby shower invites, and finally have a moment to catch your breath as you wait for baby’s arrival.
Then, as your due date gets closer, a new question pops up: when should you book your newborn session? And where should it be—at a studio or in the comfort of your own home? I am here to help you decide!
I’m a natural light photographer, which means I rely a lot on open spaces, the time of day, and big giant windows! When you’re deciding between a studio or in-home newborn session, one of the first things to consider is the overall aesthetic you’re going for in your photos.
With studio sessions, the look is usually consistent—think neutral tones, simple backdrops, and a boho-inspired vibe. In-home sessions, on the other hand, are more personal. The aesthetic comes from your actual home—the lived-in spaces like the nursery, your bedroom, or the living room. It’s all about capturing your family in your real, everyday environment.
Timing is another important factor. I typically allow two hours for a newborn session to make sure there’s plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and snuggles. Studio sessions sometimes come with stricter time limits since the space may be rented by the hour. In-home sessions tend to offer a little more flexibility—we can take our time and let things flow more naturally.
Lastly, I think it’s important to talk about who would you like participating in the sessions with an in-home newborn session siblings and pet involvement can be more easily accommodated for. Whereas in a studio setting pets might not necessarily be allowed in the studio spaces. While you’re in the comfort of your home, siblings might be able to go play in the room for a little while while I take photos of mommy and daddy with their new baby. There could be a little bit more flexibility in that.
Whether you choose an in-home session or a studio session, I’m here to help you make the decision that feels right for you. I know bringing home a newborn can be both exciting and exhausting, but you don’t have to do it alone—I’ll be there to guide you every step of the way.
If you follow me on Instagram, you might’ve seen that I’m currently building out my own studio space! It’ll have a soft, neutral, boho vibe—totally in line with my style—and I’m so excited to offer it to my clients at no extra cost. Most studio sessions come with an hourly rental fee, but once my space is complete, it’ll be included as part of your session if you choose to use it.

Q: Is in-home newborn photography better for newborns?
A: It depends on your comfort level and the vibe you want. In-home sessions are relaxed and authentic; studio sessions are more styled and consistent.
Q: Can I include pets in my newborn photos?
A: Yes! In-home sessions make it easy to involve pets. Studios may have restrictions, so always check ahead of time.
Q: What should I wear for a newborn photo session?
A: Neutral tones and soft fabrics always photograph beautifully. I send every client a styling guide to help with wardrobe planning!
