One of the most common questions I get as a photographer is: “Where should we take our photos?” And honestly? The Central Valley is full of hidden gems and wide‑open spaces just waiting to be part of your story.
Whether you’re dreaming of a wild outdoor adventure, a cozy in‑home session, or something totally unique to your family, I’ve got you covered. I photograph families, maternity, and newborns all over Oakdale, Modesto, Ripon, Escalon, Stockton, and beyond and I’ve gathered a list of some of my absolute favorite spots to inspire your next session.
This is one of the most versatile and stunning locations nearby (and one of the most popular!). With its historical covered bridge, flowing Stanislaus River, golden foothills, and rocky terrain, Knights Ferry offers a diverse scenery season after season. Spring wildflowers and fall’s warm hues are especially spectacular here.
Perfect for: Family sessions, maternity, adventurous couples, playful kids
Vibe: Natural, scenic, rocky
Pro tip: Bring comfy shoes, we will do a little exploring, but every step is worth it!
A local gem with rows of blooms, a charming winery (Clark Ferrea), and orchard backdrops without feeling overly staged. Floral textures and soft light make it elegant yet natural.
Perfect for: Maternity sessions, family minis, branding or portrait sessions
Vibe: Soft, curated, farm vibes
Pro tip: Book during peak bloom times such as late August there are a ton of sunflowers!
Hidden along Highway 120 near Jamestown, this riverside spot sits right on the Stanislaus River. It features gentle trails, rocky banks, shaded greenery, and picturesque river access—ideal for laid‑back, nature-filled sessions.
Perfect for: Families who love the river, casual engagement or couple shoots, playful child sessions
Vibe: Relaxed, adventurous, water‑loving
Pro tip: Late afternoon light shines beautifully off the water!
A bit of a drive, but so worth it! The towering redwoods, filtered sunbeams, and forest stillness feel absolutely epic a storybook setting for any session.
Perfect for: Maternity and forest-lover family sessions
Vibe: Majestic, woodsy, serene
Pro Tip: Wear cozy layers! Light sweaters, textured knits, and soft fabrics not only keep you comfortable, but they also add warmth, movement, and visual interest to your photos especially in the fall. Layers photograph beautifully and bring that extra bit of magic to your session.

For a lush forest escape without venturing far, Caswell is a calm oasis. Streams, shaded paths, and soft greenery create a fairytale-like vibe.
Perfect for: Summer time shoots, dreamy storytelling, wildflower accents in the Spring time
Vibe: Enchanting, earthy, peaceful
Pro tip: Best in spring before thick foliage and summer bugs arrive.
There’s something so intimate and authentic about shooting in your personal space. Homes, ranches, or family properties make milestone and lifestyle shoots deeply meaningful.
Perfect for: Newborns, milestone portraits, farm or ranch-style shoots
Vibe: Cozy, genuine, heartfelt
Pro tip: It doesn’t need to be fancy your story is what matters most!
One of my favorite things to suggest after a session is making an evening of it—go out and enjoy a nice meal together! It takes so much time and effort to get yourselves all dolled up, so why not make it a date night/evening out for the family?! Afterall, everyone is already dressed for the occasion. If you’re in Knights Ferry, stop by The 50’s Roadhouse for burgers, shakes, and a fun retro vibe. In Jamestown, The Willow Steakhouse offers cozy charm and hearty comfort food that’s perfect after a golden-hour session. Heading back through Ripon? Ripon Tap House is a local favorite for casual, feel-good meals. And if you’re staying close to Oakdale, you can’t go wrong with Cafe Bravo or Backwoods Burgers for something quick and delicious. It’s the perfect way to keep the connection going and enjoy some quality time together after your shoot.
Every family is different, and your session location should feel like you. I love helping clients pick the place that matches their vibe, energy, and photographic goals—whether that’s a hidden river bend, a flower farm in bloom, a towering forest, or your own cozy home space.
Ready to plan your session? I’d love to chat about which spot feels right for your family’s story.
