Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most magical milestones. As a newborn photographer, I absolutely love capturing these tender early days for families throughout the Central Valley, including Modesto, Ripon, Escalon, and beyond. If you’re wondering what a newborn photo session looks like, here’s a little guide to help you feel better prepared and excited!
My approach to newborn photography is gentle and baby-led. We go at your little one’s pace, pausing for feeding, diaper changes, or snuggles whenever needed. Sessions typically last 1.5 to 2 hours, giving us plenty of time to capture natural, heartfelt moments without feeling rushed.
The best part? You really don’t need to bring much at all. I always recommend wearing soft, neutral colors—these keep the focus on your beautiful new baby and help create timeless images you’ll treasure forever.
If you have a special keepsake, like a hand-knitted blanket, a tiny heirloom outfit, or a meaningful stuffed animal, feel free to bring it along. Adding personal touches like these makes your newborn photos even more unique to your family’s story.
Not sure what your baby should wear? Or how to coordinate outfits for the rest of the family? I’m always here to help with styling advice and love guiding clients on how to choose pieces that photograph beautifully. Never hesitate to reach out—I want you to feel completely at ease and excited for your session!
Whether we’re in your home for a lifestyle newborn session or at my cozy studio in Oakdale, your comfort is my top priority. I’ll guide you into relaxed poses, but I also love to step back and capture genuine moments—tiny fingers wrapped around yours, sleepy yawns, and the way you gaze at your baby in awe. It’s these authentic connections that tell your family’s story.
If you have older children, I absolutely love including them in your newborn photography session. Those first images of siblings together are some of the sweetest and most meaningful.
We’ll usually start with family and sibling photos first, so little ones can be done early and go off to play (or head home with a family member) while we focus on baby. Don’t worry if your toddler is wiggly or your older child needs some time to warm up—sessions are relaxed and playful, and I’ll gently guide them in a way that feels natural. My goal is to capture genuine moments that show your family just as you are, full of love and connection.
Parent Tip: Bring a favorite toy or snack for siblings to keep them engaged and happy during their part of the session. It can make all the difference!
I don’t believe in limiting memories. After your session, you’ll receive an online gallery filled with all the best images we captured together. You’ll be able to download your high-resolution newborn photos and print them wherever you like. I also share favorite print lab recommendations to ensure your images look stunning on your walls.
As a storytelling newborn photographer, my goal is to create images that remind you not just how tiny your baby was, but how it felt in those first days together—snuggled close, breathing in that newborn scent, marveling at tiny toes. These are the moments you’ll treasure forever.
I know booking a newborn session can come with lots of questions—especially in those busy first days with your little one! Here are some of the most common things families ask before their newborn photography session, so you can feel totally prepared and excited for the experience.
When is the best time to schedule newborn photos?
The best time for newborn photos is typically within the first 7-14 days after birth. Babies are usually sleepier and love being curled up during this time, which helps us capture all those sweet, cozy poses. That said, beautiful newborn photos can absolutely be taken a little later too, especially if you prefer a more awake, interactive feel.
Do you offer in-home newborn sessions?
Yes! I offer both in-home and studio newborn sessions. In-home sessions are wonderful for capturing your family in your own cozy space, while studio sessions provide a simple, distraction-free setting. I’m happy to help you decide what’s best for your family.
What if my baby is fussy or needs to eat?
Don’t worry at all—this is completely normal! My sessions are baby-led and we always take breaks as needed. Feeding, diaper changes, and snuggles are all part of the process.
How long does a newborn session take?
Newborn sessions usually last between 1.5 to 2 hours. This gives us plenty of time to work at your baby’s pace without feeling rushed.
How many photos will we receive?
I don’t set a strict limit. You’ll receive all of the best images from your session, beautifully edited and delivered in a private online gallery where you can download, share, and print.
Where can I find all your session details and pricing?
You can view all of my session information, packages, and pricing right here on my website.
