What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag for Labor & Delivery

You’ve been counting down the weeks, watching your belly grow, and feeling those sweet little kicks — now it’s almost time to meet your baby! One of the last things on your to-do list before labor? Packing your hospital bag.

Whether you’re delivering at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto or anywhere in between, this checklist will help you feel prepared and confident for your big day.

Essentials for Mom

Think comfort and convenience — the hospital will provide some basics, but having your own items can make you feel more at home.

• Hospital paperwork, ID, and insurance card – Keep these in an easy-to-grab folder.
• Birth plan – If you have one, bring a copy for your nurses (but we all know babies have a way of making their own plans!).
• Comfortable clothing – Loose nightgowns, a cozy robe, and warm socks.
• Slippers or slip-on sandals – Easy for walking the halls.
• Toiletries – Toothbrush, toothpaste, hair ties, deodorant, lip balm, face wipes.
• Long phone charger – Outlets can be far from the bed.
• Going-home outfit – Flowy dress or joggers and a loose top (your pre-pregnancy jeans can wait).

 

Essentials for Baby

The hospital will provide diapers and wipes, but you’ll still want a few personal touches for your newborn.

• Onesies and sleepers – Bring newborn and 0–3 month sizes.
• Swaddle blankets – Great for comfort and photos.
• Baby hat and mittens – Keeps them warm and prevents scratches.
• Going-home outfit – Choose something sweet but comfy for the ride home.
• Infant car seat – Have it installed and ready in your car before your due date.

Comfort & “Nice-to-Have” Items

These aren’t must-haves, but they can make your hospital stay more comfortable.

• Your favorite snacks – Hospital food can be limited.
• Pillow and blanket from home – Adds a touch of comfort.
• Bluetooth speaker or playlist – Music can be calming during labor.
• Essential oils – Lavender for relaxation, peppermint for a pick-me-up.

For Your Partner or Support Person

Your partner will be there for support, but they’ll need a few items too.

• Change of clothes
• Toiletries
