Welcoming a new baby is a beautiful, emotional, and exhausting season — and the idea of having photos taken at home can sometimes feel overwhelming. If you’re wondering “Do I need to clean my whole house?” or “What if my baby is fussy?” take a deep breath.
In-home newborn sessions are meant to feel slow, comfortable, and real. Whether you’re in Oakdale, Modesto, or somewhere else in the Central Valley, this guide will walk you through how to prepare your home, your baby, and yourself (without pressure or perfection).
The good news? Your home does not need to look like a magazine.
During an in-home newborn session, I focus on light, connection, and storytelling, not spotless rooms. Most sessions take place in just a few areas of your home, typically:
Simple prep tips that make a big difference:
I love incorporating meaningful details, baby blankets, books, nursery decor, or heirloom items. Don’t feel like everything needs to be “styled.” Lived-in homes photograph beautifully. A little behind-the-scenes secret: when I show up for your newborn session, I’ll do a quick walk-through of your home and make a few small adjustments to the space to find the best light and create a calm, natural setting for your photos.
This season is tender. You are healing, adjusting, and learning, and you deserve grace.
When it comes to what to wear, choose something that feels comfortable and like you. Soft, neutral tones photograph best and keep the focus on connection.
Helpful wardrobe tips:
Most importantly: you don’t need to “do” anything special. There’s no pressure to pose or perform. I’ll gently guide you, but your only job is to hold your baby, breathe, and be present.
Babies don’t need to be perfectly sleepy or calm for beautiful photos.
If possible, feeding your baby right before I arrive can help them settle, but we always follow your baby’s lead. Breaks for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes are not only expected, they’re part of the session. These sessions are schedule for 1.5 hours to 2 hours. This means we have plenty of time don’t feel rushed!
A few helpful baby prep tips:
Some of the sweetest images come from quiet cuddles, gentle soothing, and in-between moments.
In-home newborn sessions are slow and baby-led. There’s no rush and no strict timeline.
You can expect:
These sessions are about documenting your real life, the way your baby fits perfectly in your arms, the way your home feels in these early days.
Your house doesn’t need to be perfect.
Your baby doesn’t need to sleep the whole time.
And you don’t need to have everything figured out.
If you’re expecting a baby and looking for an Oakdale newborn photographer serving Modesto and the Central Valley, I would love to help you preserve this season in a way that feels honest and meaningful.
When you book an in-home newborn session with me, I’ll guide you every step of the way, from preparation to delivery! All you need to do is slow down and soak it all in.
